Phosphorus and nitrogen cycling

Project team: Tobias Rütting (University of Gothenburg), Louise Rütting (Brandenburg Technological University Cottbus-Senftenberg), Klaus Jarosch (Agroscope, Bern, Johanna Pihlblad (University of Lancaster), Catriona Macdonald (Western Sydney University), Yolima Carrillo (Western Sydney University)

Project period: 2018- completed

Summary

The objective of the project is simultaneous quantification of gross N mineralization and gross P mobilization in the EucFACE experiment and to reveal the rhizosphere effect.

Observations/measurements: gross nitrogen mineralization, gross nitrification, P exchange (isotope exchange kinetics).

Key findings: We could confirm the expected unchanged gross N mineralization with eCO₂ , but we could not confirm the expected increase in P mobilization with eCO₂ . The results suggest it was the limited amount of mobilizable P rather than the competition between soil microorganisms and plants for available P that may constrain P availability for plants.
